This is 4th of August, 2010 – Kishoreda’s 81st birth anniversary! Time to be reflective, joyous and sentimental! And since I’ve not been able to write and publish about other stalwarts from Hindi cinema music in the recent months, I shall dedicate this particular day to all past playback greats by compiling a list of Hindi movie songs about life (Zindagi). Pritish Nandy’s Take On Kishore Kumar

Kishore Kumar, the only Genius I ever knew – Pritish Nandy

I thought this article, written by Pritish Nandy, who has seen Kishore Kumar from close quarters during the latter’s last years, needed to be showcased here. If you enjoyed reading the other article (rather interview) by Nandy I’d linked in my blog earlier, i.e. Hilarious Kishoreda Interview, you should also be reading this one. The earlier one was penned by Nandy in the mid-80s, while starting his journalistic career. In this one, he remembers the undiminishing Kishore Kumar in 2009, and how familiar it all sounds, with KK’s trademark humor and the unparalleled genius had had underlying throughout this story.

Btw, I was saddened for the first time learning Kishoreda’s desire to sing for a pan-world audience, which I believe he thoroughly deserved since his “Main Hoon Zumroo” yodeling, and unfortunately remained unfulfilled. I’ve argued for long, the music lovers outside India have missed listening not only to him, but also several other greats from Hindi music from the 50s onwards. This was the reason I was not fully appreciative about the recent Oscars to Gulzar and Rehman, even though they fully deserved it. Yes, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS)…(hmm…how shortened a name!)….has to follow norms before giving Oscars, but equally stark should also be the facts that not only the above duo did not deserve to be the first Indian composure and lyricist to be there – there is a long list of DAADUs from the 50s onwards that can easily fill that bill – nor they were awarded for their best works – they have done far better things previously.

Should stop this whining for now though, and let you read Nandy’s article on KK.

Should We Call This Kishoreda’s Best Period?

While conceding, most Kishore Kumar fans will find all his songs priceless without any doubt, one still wonders, if KK sang better than himself ever at some point of his own career? Was he more at ease, more in Mastee, more romantic, more sentimental and more transcending ever for his listeners compared to his other times?

While making it amply clear, the following is a personal opinion and carries no academic study as such to back it up, I’d be tempted in believing, Kishore Kumar sang his best from circa 1970 to 1979, more so during the mid-70s, i.e. 72-78. There is something special about his songs from these years – the depth, intensity and flare of his voice, and the intensity of emotions and the romance he sang would often leave you ecstatic. His voice blended well with all kinds of recording methods and instruments being used in those days. He could more easily and more often transcend you, take you into an out-of-world experience through his amazing artistry. He often seemed deviating from the rehearsed compositions only to come back more exciting, overwhelming and pleasing to one’s music sense.

Did events of his life help him sing better during this period? Was he living on a different plateau during this era? He lived single from 1969 to 1976, after Madhubala’s passing away. His marital life with Yogita Bali, which he later called “a joke” in an interview, lasted just for two years from 1976 to 1978. Could it be that he was living a detached and burden-free life in emotional sense? Men often climb up their intellectual and creative summits in around their 40s. This may start from the mid-late 30s until they managed to carry on with their jobs (this may not apply to all cases, though). You can notice most greats giving their best renditions from the late 30s onwards. Bachchan was at his usual best from his mid 30s to mid-40s. Dharampaji’s prime acts, including Sholay, came during his mid-late 30s and the subsequent years. Shahrukh Khan has given some of his most successful movies in the same age-group. Even Rafi and Mukesh seemed to have evolved more after their late 30s. I’ve found their last numbers more audible compared to their earlier works.

Did you ever know why Kishoreda came to Mumbai in the first place, leave alone joining Hindi cinema’s rat race? What made him choose a vocation that he would not even dream of for his enemies? That he would shoo away his movie directors, producers and distributors, yet they could not be prevented from making him a major movie star? His take on why he went cuckoo at media and filmwallahs, what made him marry and leave three of his four wives, the most delicious cuisine on earth and last but not the least what he thought the interviewer should look like after his death?!

Fourth of August is a very special day for all Kishoreda fans. It was on this day that Kishore Midas Kumar was born in 1929 to live a remarkable life and redefine Hindi cinema playback forever through his amazing artistry. He had a strong voice, a great ability to mold the same in numerous ways and a very deep sense of emotions, suras and ragas he sang, and this made him stand apart from the other greats of that era who made singing somewhat technical despite their ability to sway audiences. As a result, Kishoreda’s legacy continues to grow and charm the audiences of next generation as well.

I keep my growing up nieces reminded of the cultural impact Kishoreda has caused over them. From titling movies from his songs to adopting his way of singing and making ads that sold items by playing his scores, the current Indian entertainment has plenty of Kishoreda imprints. I told my 16 year old niece of what impact MJ had caused over Hindi cinema, the day he passed away. It is not hidden that Hindi movies have plenty of imitation of MJ through their choreography. Kishoreda has given the current crop of listeners and performers the same legacy.

I’d like to remember and thank Kishoreda on his 80th birth anniversary for the immense musical solace and fulfillment he has given us.

Thank you kishoreda for bestowing my generation with an out of world experience through your unparalleled voice.

Thank you Kishoreda for teaching us the ethics of good music and seeding the seeds of what I should call an ability to appreciate good talent irrespective of its class, creed or the cultural background it may belong to.

Thank you Kishoreda for always making me believe I had something to appreciate in my own backyard, which could give the rest of the world a run for its own money. I never had any means to listen to western music, including that from the great names and banners such as Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Beatles and Michael Jackson in the 70s and 80s, the times you swayed the Hindi music world. However, I never felt embarrassed or any reason to think I had missed anything essential, whenever faced with pro-Beatles, Elvis Presley or MJ listening and deck thumping audiences. Not to mention the savvy classical genre and its elite listeners…Kishoreda you could match them as well, in class, style and depth.

Thank you Kishoreda for continuing to enthrall us through your golden era songs even today. May your glory shine forever, may you continue to live on in the minds and hearts of the Indian fans for a thousand more generations to come!

Phewww! An unending run to look out for Lata Mangeshkar songs finally brings up my first music blog in over two months. So here we go with a list of Lata Mangeshkar and Kishore Kumar duets first. More Lata songs to follow later. These, apart from a quick compilation of Mukesh, Manna Dey and RD Burman hits, may be my last music blog efforts. I’ll have to find out ways for writing about music sans any reference to external resources in future. The current compilation too gets mainly sourced from Dishant.com, like its earlier siblings. Unless Dishant and its ilk could keep growing in future as well, this whole effort may go down the drain, one is afraid to say!

डॉन आज बहुत खुश है, क्यों कि आज वह पूरे चालीस बरस का हो गया. लेकिन उससे बैर मत मोल लेना. उसकी बंदूक का निशाना आज भी बरकरार है…होशियार!

Don Aaj Khush Hai, kyonki aaj vah poore chaalees baras kaa ho gayaa. Lekin usase bair mat mol lenaa. usakee bandook kaa nishaanaa aaj bhee barkaraar hai…hoshiyaar!

I woke up feeling I should be singing Kishoreda’s “Main Hoon Don” aloud on completing my 40th year this morning. Didn’t myself know the rationale behind this desire. Not to forget, rehearsing Kishoreda’s 11000 volt songs is not possible in my neighborhood anymore, which is more congested these days as compared to what it was 18 years ago, when we moved in. The next door apartments and windows that did not exist to stare at me then, and neither were those shops lining up next to my balcony, are firmly placed around my home today. Some of these came years later thanks to some under-hand-deals between the authorities and builders. Apart from housing blocks, the number of kids went skywards as well – some elders have taken a break from this world as well, but about that later – and those loitering around in those years have started taking up various roles in today’s life.

Gone are days when you could reenact Kishore, Rafi and Mukesh without ever being conscious of its ramification. Only a handful of buffaloes and stray dogs perished next to my home listening to it silently. Of course, the kids of my household enjoyed being part of my reenactments, but they have been compelled to go busy as well due to ageing. There is a new entrant, an eight year old niece of mine, who still finds it worthful to play innocent. But, most of the time I have to remind her how Kishoreda was different from his own copycats. She may still find Himesh Reshamiya’s “Ek Haseena Thee” more hummable though, as compared to Kishore Kumar’s, I strongly suspect!

Therefore, reciting KK’s original wasn’t my plan of ideas this morning, but blogging about the same was indeed, so here we go now: the mark of 40 can be unique in a man’s life. On one hand, you are not that much old that you should start to think about your retirement plans, but at the same time, you wouldn’t live as blindly either as you would have done a decade and half ago. Many notions that might have been part of your conscience then would either be gone today or be highly infeasible to carry on with. You would have fallen in tandem with the ways of life by this age, and adopted newer ideas to make it sound more complete. This enlightenment of yours may not be known to others though. They might still examin you from their own beliefs, nothing wrong with that either. But, they should also know – from someone who recently turned 40 and was more awakened – that they shouldn’t be messing around with him now, and also who the real boss was in their visinity and behave accordingly…the real Don resides here…lol…

I didn’t know turning 40 could bring DON-HOOD upon you, until I became one myself! Here is KK’s own DON bite to have a toast on this occasion!

Kishore Vs Rafi Debate – What Does It Say About You?

I had decided to discontinue writing more about the Kishore vs Rafi debate in 2008, thus hoping to put an end to the feud in my weblog at least. Though, this severely handicapped my ability to speak about the Hindi movie songs from bygone era, something I can’t think of living without. So, I decide disowning my own resolution in 2009 now. Much better to have Kishore-Rafi duels than not speak anything at all or try putting up diplomacy to please the other side…ha ha…I can see the barrage coming up from both Rafi and Kishore Kumar fans, and also the tough moderation job entitled for me in this thread!

But, there is a better reason why I decided to take this KK vs Rafi plunge this time. Surely much fairer than having a go at boasting about one or the other singer (KK in my case). Hope I’ll find my readers making valued observations, as I do it. The crux of my today’s post can be described as below: I have noticed while following Kishore vs Rafi feud online, that the two warring sides can be traced back to two wholly different schools of ideas, not only in terms of the music they follow, but also in how they choose their cultural, social and political leanings. They may seem carrying two varying mindsets and two contrasting notions. In fact, one can go to the extent of saying, it was possible to broadly predefine anyone’s persona, provided you had an insight of whom they liked more, Kishore or Rafi!

Who Are Kishoreda’s Fans?

They are the anti-traditionalists, I suppose. They are the ones who love watching the barriers of cultural inhibitions and social norms going down. They love a stone being hurled at the rooftop, if it brought back a newer and redeemed world order for them. They hate living in a hierarchical system, being burdened by undue etiquette and red-tapism. They can be emotionally very strong and susceptible both. This leads into positives and negatives for them, both.

Pros About Kishore Kumar Fans

They can easily connect with any emotion or music piece without awaiting for it to be delivered in a legit manner. They can directly connect with what any artisan might wish to say, have a one-to-one identification with them and disclose their liking without awaiting for the world to acknowledge it. They would love fusion, experimentation and adaptation of ideas in music and life. Purity is the last concern for them! They live life with intensity and are placed better to enjoy the works of arts and music in a world, that was fast getting globalized and informal.

And Their Flimsiness

Won’t easily be made to please. Would not care following norms and would therefore lack in reasoning often. For example, see them making “Kishore Kumar is GOD” like one-liners and that’s all. My chest also gets puffed with pride reading them, no doubt. They can be highly impulsive and emotional and susceptible to provocations, but the world is not just about gatecrashing and diving one mile down into an intense RAGA. This means their craving for a few things in life, like Kishore Kumar songs in this case, might force them to miss out certain other things (read Rafi et all).

Who Are Rafi Fans?

Traditionalists, I would say! They are the ones with a greater faith and patience in their establishments. They would not mind following etiquette and proven legacies. Newer ideas will have to await a little longer and push harder to make it into their bastion. They would always enjoy living under a hierarchical order. This again will lead into positives and negatives, both.

Positives

Can boast to have a vast resource of proven ideas and music to rely on. Will have a greater knowledge-base to put forth their views. They can claim to occupy the soul of Indian society and its heritage. Rafi sang the classical Indian romance and its emotions indeed.

Negatives

Outdated ideas. Out of synch from the contemporary world and themselves both….ha ha…couldn’t stop from showing my KK bias here. With the neutrality over now, let us have the war started…and in the due course hope to receive some intelligent comments as well.

PS - Exceptions can never be ruled out. My late dad was a pukka traditionalist, yet he admired Kishoreda more. Read my above suggestions with this aspect in mind.
