I will now blog a series on popular Hindi music, which won’t have the usual six – Kishore Kumar, Mohammed Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle – except for a few duets and chorus songs they might still be part of. So, I’m starting with a compilation of Shamshad Begum songs here, which seem to bring out the finest of the female protagonists, Begum used to provide her playback for with her enchanting and melodious voice despite the technical and craft-related drawbacks she must have faced in those early times. Get to know about some interesting facts of her life and career through this Wikipedia page and other similar resources, including the somewhat surprising hesitation of being photographed being alluded to her. I don’t recall having seen her image previously, thought, before starting to google about her music today.

  1. You come across hundreds of play back singers imitating Mr Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Mukesh and so on and so forth and you also can find hundreds of female singers who can imitate Lata Mangeshker and Asha Bhonsele but to this day i have not come across a single singer who can imitate Sham Shad Begum. Mr OP Nayyar has rightly said that her voice was temple bells.
