Sad Mohammed Rafi Songs

Rafi Saab, never seen not smiling. A truly divine soul! From where did he borrow tears for these amazing songs?! The good humans must be having a better insight into the human sorrow!

One requires more time deciding about Mohammed Rafi songs compared to Kishoreda’s. Why so? Two reasons. Firstly, I’m no expert of the legacy Rafi left behind. Having listened to KK more keenly since my teenage-hood makes it only easier for me to classifying him based on various moods. The same could not be spoken about Rafi, though. Secondly and more significantly, Rafi’s era belonged to a better poetry. I realize this more, the more I listen to his songs from the 50s and 60s nowadays. They require more time classifying based on various moods. Kishoreda was a highly passionate singer, with better recording techniques and the composers of RD Burman’s stature by his side, but not the same enchanting poetry to aid him that Rafi enjoyed only a decade earlier. The Hindi cinema was going through a transitional period with a hoard of new cine techniques like Eastman color, cinema scope and the slow motion cinematography by the onset of the 70s, as opposed to the good scripting and song writing that dominated in Rafi’s time.

The scenario worsened further after Kishore Kumar’s demise, as the Hindi music slump into a lasting morass of the missing talent, intent and seriousness. A better poetry and scripting might soon make a come back though, with lucrative funds and settled techniques by the side of the present-day movie-makers.

    I agree, the lyrics and melody in those years was better. And one appreciates Rafi more now listening to him.

    Mohd Rafi made a total changeover when he started singing for Shammi Kapoor. Though that in itself was a novelty, I think the seriousness with which he was considered dropped a few notches; however, no one could take away from that fantastic voice.

    In this list itself, there are some super haunting numbers!

    - Din Dhal Jaaye Haaye
    - Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Halat
    - Ham Bekhudi Mein Tum Ko
    - Maine Chand Aur Sitaron Ki
    - Raat Bhar Ka Hai Mehmaan
    - Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki (my all time favorite!)
    Well there are so many; I just picked a few. Real dil-tod songs!

    This reminds me of another superb performanceof Rafi in the film “Sehra”. “Taqdir ka fasana, jaker kisko sunayen, is dil mein jal rahe hain, armano ki chitayen.”
